Getting your Learners Licence (Learners Permit) in Victoria.
If you are aged 16 to 20 ..
- You must get a Learners Licence at a VicRoads Centre * before taking driving LESSONS.
- You must hold a Learners Licence for 12 months* before taking a driving TEST.
- You should be at least 16 years of age to get a Learners Licence.

- An official log book will be issued to you with your Learners Licence.
- Bring your Log Book to every lesson to enable us to record your experience hours.
- You must be 17 years old to get your P's
- You must have a minimum of 120 hours log book hours recorded.
If you are aged 21 to 25 ..
- You must hold a Learners Licence for 6 months* before taking a TEST.
If you are aged over 25 ..
- You must hold a Learners Licence for 3 months* before taking a TEST.
- *Unless you hold an overseas licence or obtain an exemption

To obtain a learner licence you must prove who you are and where you live by providing ..
- A Primary document (for example a birth certificate, passport or citizenship certificate).
- A Secondary document (for example a bank or credit card with a signature).
- Proof of residency (for example a paid service account - rates, electricity or telephone - showing your name and address).
- At least one Primary or Secondary document must include a signature.

What sort of Test is it ?
- There are 32 questions in the general road rules test.
- The questions have multiple choice answers -

- You will need to answer 25 or more questions correctly to pass the test.
- A Learners licence is issued on passing the test.
- A Learners licence is valid for 3 years.

What are my obligations once I have my learners permit ?
- Once you have obtained a learner licence, you are able to drive a motor vehicle on the road providing you are with someone who has held an open licence for that class of vehicle for at least one year.
- Your learner licence is valid for 3 years and you must adhere to the conditions specified for that licence.
- You are only allowed to drive the type of vehicle specified on your licence.
- You must keep the licence with you when you drive and show it to a police officer if requested.
- You are by law to display L Plates on the front and rear of the vehicle.
- if you place L Plates on the windows of the vehicle, you are potentially breaking the law by restricting vision of the driver
